Preview of March Cleanup
Join us on Sunday, March 7th for a mountain hike and trash clean-up! We will start from Zhaozong Reservoir (west of Kunming) and finish at Bamboo Temple, enjoy the beautiful mountain and lake landscape while helping to preserve its natural beauty.
We’ll meet up at exit A, Mianshan Subway Station, Line 3 and we will walk for about 30 minutes (2km) to Zhaozong Yi Village where we would stop at a local Chinese Muslin Hui restaurant to grab a quick lunch. The friendly family who own the restaurant serve authentic Yunnan dishes such as Yunnan style hash brown, and assorted stir-fired vegetables. If you are not up for lunch, feel free to drop in to have a cup of tea to keep you hydrated for the hike.
Next we’ll walk up to Zhaozong Reservoir, which is a very popular swimming and fishing spot for the local villagers. You are not encouraged to take a dip as “No Swimming” signs can be spotted at almost every corner around the lake. Then we ascend from the rear of the reservoir, follow a dirt/cobble path and summit the mountain in an hour. The mountaintop offers stunning panoramic view of Kunming and Dian Lake, it’s a popular hang-out spot for the locals. In an unfortunate contrast to the breath-taking city, lake and mountain view, trash has been accumulated around the scenic area. As a group, we will remove enough trash to polish up the site. For the cleanup, you will need a reusable trash bag, tongs or gloves. We will provide a limited supply of all, but it is recommended you bring your own.
We will descend from here and continue down on the paths that snake through the woods. Our cleanup will end after we reach Bamboo Temple.
Qiongzhu Temple, or Bamboo Temple, is a Buddhist temple situated on Yu'an Mountain to the northwest of Kunming. The name of the temple (Qiongzhu) refers to a type of bamboo. The Bamboo Temple was established during the Yuan dynasty as the first temple dedicated to Zen Buddhism in Yunnan. It has since been burned down and reconstructed several times. The present structure mostly dates from the late Qing dynasty.
The temple is most renowned for the painted clay sculptures of the 500 Buddhist arhats. The sculptures which are known as the "sculptured pearls in the oriental treasure-house" were created during the reign of the Guangxu Emperor (r. 1875–1908) in the Qing dynasty, when the temple was undergoing major repairs. Li Guangxiu, a folk clay artist from Sichuan Province, took his students to Kunming where they spent seven years (1883–1890) to create the sculptures.
After a short visit of the temple, we will hop on Bus C61 to head back to the city around 4/5 pm.

The Journey
The team started out at 10:30am on their treacherous hike on the dirt trails off the mountain area, reaching the secluded and tranquil Miaogao Temple, which happens to be a popular weekend hangout amongst the locals. A delicious vegan buffet was served allowing the volunteers to refuel and energize for the task ahead.
The Temple is also a famous spot for city dwellers, as they flock to the mountain to collect spring water, this however, leads to mass amounts of trash and litter being tossed away carelessly along the mountain trails. Leaving the local Ayi’s overwhelmed and exhausted as they continuously try to keep the place in tip-top condition.

Impactful Change
After lunch, the team then descended down the trails, picking up litter and collecting trash. Volunteers of all ages from all backgrounds, united together as they worked tirelessly trying to clean up the area. An astonishing amount of trash was collected, gathered and responsibly disposed of at the designated bins around the scenic area.

Not Done Yet
Litter is forever a problem amongst our streets, parks and scenic spots, which ultimately takes away the beauty and dampens the atmosphere for visitors.
Awareness is a fundamental resource we can use to help people understand the impacts of their actions on the environment, however leading by example is a key element for change.
The Yunnan Mountain Cleanup project is the first of many! It happens on the first or second weekend of every month. The project aims to gather volunteers who are eager to hike around the mesmerizing city of Kunming, cleaning up local trails along the way.
